Private Flute Lessons in Merrimack, NH
At AB Music School, we offer private, one-on-one flute lessons in Merrimack, NH for students of all ages and experience levels. Our in-home studio in north Merrimack, conveniently located near the Bedford town line, provides a focused and supportive environment where students can grow as confident, expressive musicians.
Flute instruction is not simply one of many instruments we teach — it is a true area of specialization. Amanda began playing flute in sixth grade and has continued for over 25 years. Throughout that time, she has performed in multiple symphonic orchestras and flute ensembles, developing both technical depth and musical maturity.
For the past decade, Amanda has worked as flutemaker, most recently for Wm. S. Haynes Company as a finisher — serving as one of the final playtesters and mechanical technicians before professional instruments are shipped to stores. This role requires a precise ear, advanced technical control, and a detailed understanding of flute mechanics. She not only understands how the instrument should sound and respond, but also how it functions internally.
That experience brings a unique advantage to her students. She knows the flute inside and out — musically and mechanically.
Professional Insight
Few private teachers have experience preparing professional instruments for performance. Amanda’s role as a flutemaker gives her a deep understanding of tone, mechanics, and response — an advantage her students benefit from every week.
Who We Teach
We work with flute students at every stage of development, including:
Beginner students starting their first year of school band
Middle and high school musicians looking to strengthen tone and technique
Students preparing for auditions, competitions, or youth orchestra
Adult learners beginning flute for the first time or returning after a break
Flute requires careful attention to breath support, embouchure formation, posture, and tone production from the very beginning. Early, thoughtful instruction prevents bad habits and builds a strong technical foundation.
What Flute Students Develop
Lessons focus on building both technical skill and musical expression. Areas of instruction include:
Proper embouchure formation and breath control
Developing a clear, consistent tone
Finger technique and fluency
Intonation and pitch control
Articulation and phrasing
Music reading and rhythmic accuracy
Effective practice habits
Solo and ensemble performance preparation
For beginners, we emphasize correct fundamentals from day one. For advancing students, we refine tone quality, increase technical agility, and develop expressive control.
Because Amanda has professional experience evaluating and adjusting flutes, she is also able to help students understand how their instrument should feel and respond — and identify when mechanical issues may be affecting performance.
Why Private Flute Lessons Make a Difference
School band programs provide valuable ensemble experience, but individual attention is limited in a group setting. Private flute lessons allow for detailed feedback on posture, hand position, embouchure development, and breath support — areas that are difficult to monitor consistently in a classroom.
One-on-one instruction ensures that each student receives focused guidance tailored to their strengths, challenges, and goals. Small technical corrections early on can dramatically affect tone, endurance, and long-term progress.
Just as importantly, lessons build confidence. Amanda is deeply committed to helping students discover their own connection to music. Coaching young musicians, building trust, and watching students grow into confident performers has been one of the most rewarding aspects of her career.
Audition and Performance Preparation
Preparing for an audition or performance requires more than repetition. Students learn how to structure practice time, isolate difficult passages, and perform with consistency under pressure.
Advanced students may work on:
All-State or regional ensemble auditions
Youth orchestra auditions
Solo competitions
Recital and performance preparation
The goal is steady, measurable growth — both technically and musically.
